Wreckage of Captain James Cook's ship Endeavour may be in U.S. harbor The wreckage of the Endeavour, the storied British ship that Captain James Cook sailed through the uncharted South Pacific, may lie a few hundred feet off Rhode Island's coast in Newport Harbour. The 105-foot long, three-masted bark - later renamed the Lord Sandwich - had been hired out by the British Royal Navy as a troop transport when it was one of 13 ships deliberately sunk by the British in 1778 in an effort to blockade the harbour. New research by the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project indicated it was one of a group of five vessels sunkin an effort to prevent French forces from coming to the aid ofthe rebellious American colonies. An inspection of the site by RIMAP, in water less than 50 feet (about 15 metres) deep, found the remnants of four ships and an indentation where a fifth may be, Kathy Abbass, executive director of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission, said. 'When we saw that there's five that were put in front of the north battery, well glory be, we found four of them and there's a hole where the fifth one should be,' Ms Abbass said. 'That's pretty significant.'
The HMS Endeavour was first launched in 1764 as the Earl of Pembroke, and then renamed His Majesty's Bark the Endeavour after it was purchased four years later by the British Royal Navy. It was sent out to explore the Pacific Ocean in August 1768 both to observe the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun and in the search for the continent which was then called Terra Australis Incognita, or unknown southern land. The previous transit of Venus in 1639 had provided a vast amount of the information astronomers and scientists had about the size of the solar system and universe. The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project believes they have found its scuttled remains just off the coast The ship departed from Plymouth with 94 people on board, including Captain Cook. remy hair extensionsIt travelled down the coast of Africa before cutting across the Atlantic and arriving in Rio de Janeiro in November of that year. The boat then set out to round Cape Horn, which it managed to do in January after its third try after wind, stormy weather and difficult conditions forced Captain Cook to turn back during his first two attempts. In April the ship reached Tahiti, where it stayed for the next four months and where astronomer Charles Green was able to study the transit of Venus in June. After months exploring the Pacific for islands, the Endeavour reached the coast of New Zealand in October, becoming the first European vessel to land on the island in more than 100 years. Dutch explorer Abel Tasman had previously reached the islands of New Zealand and Tasmania during his 1642 journey while with the Dutch East India Company. Captain Cook spent six months exploring and mapping the coast of New Zealand and claimed the land for Great Britain before sailing west. A statue of the 18th century French Count de Rochambeau points towards the harbour where researchers believe they have found the wreck of Captain Cook's ship the Endeavour The wreck, believed to be the Endeavour, was found in Narragansett Bay off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island The ship was launched in 1764 as the merchant collier Earl of Pembroke. A painting shows the ship leaving Whitby Harbour in 1768 In April 1770 individuals on the ship first spotted Australia and on April 29 the HMS Endeavour became the first European vessel to make landfall on the east coast of the island. Captain Cook spent four months charting the coast and at one point ran into trouble when the ship struck part of the Great Barrier Reef. The ship was 24 miles (about 38 kilometres) off the coast at the time with not enough life boats, but managed to clear the water from the hull of the ship and make its way safely back to shore. The ship continued to explore the island and in November was taken out of the water to have major repairs done before setting sail back to Great Britain. It set sail the day after Christmas and in March rounded the Cape of Good Hope before docking in Cape Town. On July 12 it made its way into port in Dover, almost three years after it first left Plymouth. Captain Cook was later promoted to Commander and explored the Pacific twice more on the HMS Resolution.
He was killed in 1779 during a fight with Hawaiians on the island. The Endeavour soon became a naval transport ship and was sold to a shipping magnate just before the start of the Revolutionary War. That individual then tried to sell the ship back to the British when the demand for ships increased during the war but they would not accept the vessel given its age and what it had been through over the years. The seller then made the decision to rename the boat Lord Sandwich and try to sell it again, which worked after the boat underwent serious repairs. It was sent to Rhode Island as a prison ship when the British attempted to recapture the port city of Newport in 1778 and there it was blown up in hopes of creating a blockade in the harbour during the Battle of Rhode Island. The privately funded group estimates it will need to raise about $1 million to complete the fieldwork, and another $7.5million to build a proposed research facility and museum to study and showcase the artefacts. The story of the Endeavour has inspired subsequent tales of exploration, including the Star Trek television and movie series. One of the United States' former fleet of space shuttles also took the Endeavour's name. There is a replica of the ship at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. This is not the first time a wreckage has been identified as the Endeavour. Another ship was found in an area of the harbour that has since been built over as landfill, that may in fact have been the Resolution, the ship Captain Cook sailed around Antarctica, Ms Abbass said. 'It turns out that Rhode Island, specifically Newport, is the home of two vessels that went around the world with Cook,' she said. It is not clear how long it will take the researchers to confirm if the wreckage is the Endeavour's. 'It's a slow journey and a very careful and particular journey,' Charlotte Taylor, with the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission, said. 'Every step of the way takes time, money, energy.'
